Representative Tom McGrath Resigns

Representative Tom McGrath, (R-Ferrisburg) is resigning from his Addison-1 House seat to assume the position of Grand Worthy Trustee in the International Order of Eagles and has decided that he cannot perform both duties adequately. McGrath has been in the House since 1996.

Armed Intruder Shot at Church Service

On Sunday morning police shot and killed a man brandishing a knife at a Unitarian Universalist service at the West Village Meeting House in Brattleboro. The man has not yet been identified, nor his motives made clear. Vermont State Police have taken over the investigation of the shooting, and detectives are interviewing witnesses.


IBM Lays Off Essex Employees

Five hundred workers at the IBM plant in Essex Junction were laid off on Nov. 28. The company has been suffering a year-long downturn. No more layoffs are planned, but representatives say that the future is uncertain.

Brattleboro Photographer Escapes Treason Charge

Under a 1917 law, Brattleboro Reformer photographer Jason Henske could have been prosecuted on a treason charge for photographing the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant while the country is at war. Windam County State's Attorney Dan Davis decided not to prosecute.
