Student/Faculty Responsibility

Author: [no author name found]

Among the proposed changes to the Honor Code language is a more clear defininition of student and faculty responsibilities. While the information is the same, the proposed draft collects all relevant responsibilities into one concise section. It reads:

Student Responsibilities

It is the responsibility of the student to sign the Honor Code pledge on all examinations, research papers, and laboratory reports. Faculty members reserve the right to require the signed Honor Code pledge on other kinds of assigned academic work. The student must write in full and sign the statement, "I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this assignment."

Graded assignments should be the work of the individual student, unless otherwise directed by the instructor.

The individual student is responsible for ensuring that his or her work does not involve plagiarism. Ignorance of the nature of plagiarism or of College rules may not be offered as a mitigating circumstance.

Students with uncertainties and questions on matters relating to footnoting, citation of sources, paraphrasing lecture notes, and proper recognition of collaborative work on homework assignments and laboratory reports should consult with the course instructor for whom they are preparing work.

Faculty Responsibilities

It is the responsibility of the instructor, at the beginning of each term, to discuss with his or her students the College's policies governing academic honesty as they relate to a particular course. The instructor's additional Honor Code expectations should also be included on the course syllabus.

In every case an instructor will make clear before giving an examination what he or she considers to be authorized and unauthorized aid.

Faculty reserve the right to require the signed Honor Code pledge before grading assigned academic work.

Questions or concerns regarding faculty compliance with the Honor Code should be directed to the Office of the Dean of the Faculty.
