Charles D. Brakeley, a well-known and respected retiree of Middlebury College, passed away last Thursday at the age of 82.
"Pete" to those who knew him, Brakeley began his 17-year career at the College in 1964 as assistant to the director of development. In 1967 Brakeley was named the director of financial aid, a position he held until he retired in 1981.
Four out of Brakeley's five sons attended Middlebury College. As a parent himself, Brakeley brought a realistic and caring touch to his interactions as financial aid director with parents of College students.
The Brakeley household was frequented by students from the College seeking to exchange the stresses of campus life for a homey, welcoming environment.
Brakeley's ongoing support of the Middlebury College community was evident in his continuing presence at athletic events, especially in recent years with the matriculation of his granddaughter in the Class of 2004.
Additionally, Brakeley gave his time and energy as a member of the Addison County Counseling Service, the Middlebury School Board, the Sheldon Museum and Porter Medical Center.
