Four Staff Members Recognized for Service

Author: Alyssa Thurston

Secretary of the College Eric Davis announced the recipients of the 2003 Staff Recognition Awards.
This year's recipients included Head Baker Wayne (Pat) Broughton from Dining Services, Laboratory Supervisor from Science Technical Support Services Crispin Butler, Associate Dean of Student Affairs Kathy Foley-Giorgio and Facilities Management Supervisor Wayne Hall.
Professor Emeritus of Sociology Rudolph K. Haerle Jr. established the awards "as a way of recognizing the many members of the Middlebury College staff who contribute to the vitality of the College community and support the College's academic mission."
Every year, four awards total are presented. One award goes to a staff member from Dining Services, another goes to a staff member from Facilities Management, and the remaining two go to staff members from any College department.
Staff members may be nominated for the annual award by any member of the College community.
A selection committee, comprised of the award winners from the previous year, makes the final decisions on the award recipients. This year's committee members were Director of Computing and Networking Tom Cutter, First Cook/Chef at the Freeman International Center (FIC) Paul LaRocque, Assistant Director of Custodial Services Linda Ross from Facilities Management and Assistant Director of the Rohatyn Center for International Affairs Charlotte Tate.
Davis served as the non-voting mediator of the committee.
Criteria used to select award winners, as specified by Haerle, included the nominees' past leadership experience, stewardship, their general attitude and community service.
Ross acknowledged that choosing this year's group of winners was difficult, given the outstanding qualities of all the nominees. She praised the four winners for 2003, saying, "Middlebury is very fortunate to have these four individuals as part of our staff, and I am honored to be able to work with each of the."
The four winners will each receive a cash prize of $200 and their names will be engraved on a plaque that hangs in The Grille.
President John McCardell and President of Staff Council Lisa Terrier will present the Awards on Monday, June 2, at a reception to be held in Redfield Proctor at 4:30 p.m.
