During a lengthy trip to the barrens of Wisconsin this past weekend, the Middlebury women's hockey team didn't mess around. They did however manage to pick up three W's against top-notch opponents. A 4-3 overtime thriller against Gustavus Adolphus, a dominating 4-0 romp over UWRF and a 2-0 grind over St. Thomas kept the Lady Panthers undefeated season rolling.
In the weekend's first contest the Panthers found themselves up 3-1 after goals from Tory MacNeil '08, Ellen Sargent '07, and the always dangerous Emily Quizon '06. Somehow the seventh ranked Gusties pounded their way back into the contest and knotted the score at three at the 12:41 mark. The Panthers got right down to business in the fourth frame and flexed their hockey muscle on a Emily McNamara '07 goal that found the nylon only 26 seconds into the extra frame.
The next day provided more Middlebury success and showcased the team's ability to dominate. With a goal and an assist apiece, McNamara and Karen Levin '08 led the panther strike force while freshmen Lacey Farrell and Kerry Kiley each tacked on a goal of their own. First year netminder Angie Todd stood her ground and stopped 21 River Falls attempts.
Farrell and Lindsay Jones '05 kept the good times rolling on Sunday with second period goals against St. Thomas. That would be all the offense Middlebury would need to wrap up another dominating weekend. Kate Kogut '06 was her usual self between the pipes while picking up her second win of the weekend and her fourth shutout of the season.
The Panthers have outscored their opponents 48-9 during the current campaign. After racking up these three victories, the defending national champions seem to be in good shape while heading into the heart of their season. With opponents from Hamilton looming on the horizon, the Panthers look tough and game ready for any team in the country.
Through a solid attacking corps, a defense that is so good that its scary, and solid keeping in goal, there is no doubt Middlebury will continue to provide winning results.
