To the Editor:
Personally, I don't know what the hoopla about the Brainerd Commons screening of "Jaws" in the Natatorium is all about. In the last two issues of The Campus, opinion pieces were published condemning the event as frivolous and wasteful. Unlike the authors of these pieces, I actually attended the event and can give a fairer account; I respectfully disagree with their opinions and found the event creative, fun and thrilling.
Both authors were concerned with the perceived frivolity of the event. I couldn't disagree more. Watching Amity Island vacationers get eaten alive while floating on water was titillating. It brought a new dimension to the film and heightened everyone's senses.
To me, what's frivolous is drinking obscene amounts of alcohol and parading around Vermont. It was my interpretation of the other opinion pieces that spending should be limited to the been-there-done-that events that people already complain about or skip all together.
And the suggestion of more school-sponsored events with alcohol is unrealistic and excludes half the student body. Why not spend the money we have and provide fun alternatives for those who are looking for them?
And, in terms of the environmental aspect, pardon me when I say, "Give me a break."
I'd like to praise Brainerd Commons for its creativity. The event was a great idea, and was enjoyed by all attendees. The commons system is doing a great job of spicing up weekends, and it helps us avoid the monotony that can be Middlebury on a Saturday night.
Sincerely,
