UConn honors Coach Dee Rowe '52

Donald "Dee" Rowe '52 was among 16 honorees in the inaugural class inducted into the "Huskies of Honor" recognition program. Rowe, the head men's basketball coach at the University of Connecticut, compiled a 120-88 record from 1969-1977 and was a two-time New England Coach of the Year. He was honored along with current NBA stars Ray Allen, Richard Hamilton, Cliff Robinson, Donyell Marshall and Emeka Okafor, present-day Huskies coach Jim Calhoun, as well as Hugh Greer, Walt Dropo, Vin Yokabaskas, Art Quimby, Toby Kimball, Wes Bialosuknia, Tony Hanson, Corny Thompson and Chris Smith.

At halftime of the UConn-Syracuse game on Feb. 5, Rowe received a plaque and a standing ovation from the 10,167 fans at Gampel Pavilion. At the end of the ceremony, permanent panels with the names of the inductees were unveiled in the West end of the arena.

Prior to Rowe's induction, he had spent the last two weeks of January co-teaching the "Coaching Young Athletes" seminar with men's hockey coach Bill Beaney. Rowe founded the class and it was recently renamed, "The Dee Rowe Issues in Sports Class" in his honor.

Women's teams instruct Girl Scouts

On Jan. 28 the Bubble was filled to the brim. The women's squash team's match brought its fair share of fans. And while that was going on, other women's athletic teams were putting on sports clinics for the local girl scouts. Teammates on the women's hockey, swimming, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, softball and field hockey squads introduced the girls to a wide variety of sports.

Judging by the smiles on their faces and the large amount of laughter everyone seemed to be having a good time.

Kurtz-Phelan named Player of Week

Abby Kurtz-Phelan '07, a forward on the women's hockey team, was named the NESCAC Women's Hockey Player of the Week for the week of Feb 5. Kurtz-Phelan scored three goals and had two assists in wins over Williams and St. Anselm. This came just after having two assists and scoring the game-winning goal in overtime against Bowdoin, and adding another assist in a 7-1 victory over Colby.

Despite only playing in 15 of the team's 21 games, Kurtz-Phelan leads the Panthers with 12 goals. Ten of the 12 goals have come in conference games. She and Annemarie Cellino '09 share the team lead in points with 24 apiece.
