Sportsbriefs Wet weather wreaks havoc

Author: David Infante

Softball beat Williams in the first game, but lost the next two

The Middlebury softball team may have been a little shaken up due to the change in venue for Saturday's games, picking up only one win in three games at Williams. The games, which were originally meant to be played at Middlebury, were moved when the field was determined unplayable as a result of the wet weather. After winning a close match 2-1, the Panthers dropped the second game 13-9 and the final contest with a score of 5-3. Jennifer Williams '07, who pitched Middlebury to the early 2-1 win, was unable to continue her streak, and gave up nine hits and five earned runs in the second game. The squad drops to fourth place in the NESCAC West Division with a 1-2 conference record. Middlebury will play Hamilton away on April 18.

Wet weather affects whether or not Middlebury teams will play

This past weekend's raw weather has been unpleasant and unwelcome, and has also impacted the sports schedules for a host of Middlebury squads. Panthers' Softball was relocated to Williams, while Middlebury's Track and Field's events were postponed indefinitely. Men's Golf and Baseball were also among the victims of the most recent nor'easter over the weekend, foregoing competition till a later date.

Members of the women's golf team lack hot putters in cold

The Middlebury women's golf team delivered a solid performance on Saturday, placing third in a field of five at the Vassar College Invitiational Open. The Panthers finished the tournament with a team total of 367, just 21 off Williams, the eventual tournament winner.

The tournament was held at the Spackenkill Country Club, in Poughkeepsie, N. Y. , a par-72 course. Karen Levin '08 led the squad for the day with a total of 90 strokes, followed by Heather Gallagher '07 (91), Allison Ortega '07 (92) and Kerry Ortega '07 (94). Julie Ellenberger '09 finished the day with a 95, which placed her just outside the top four scoring slots.

Despite finishing behind rival Williams, Ellenberger is optimistic for the upcoming competition.

"We're not really sure what happened [at Vassar]," she wrote in an email, "but we've kind of come back down to earth after kind of dominating in the fall and are ready to work hard to improve, especially on our putting which was a clear weakness. It will be difficult seeing as we probably will not be able to get outside at all, but we are trying to make practice more competitive and realistic (with simulating course play and putting competitions). We've put Saturday behind us and will be ready for Amherst next weekend!"

Lacrosse player Liza Humes '07 is NESCAC Player of Week

The women's lacrosse team's own Liza Humes '07 came away with NESCAC Player of the Week honors for her essential contributions to the Panthers' 2-0 week. Humes started the charge last Thursday, notching four goals and two assists along with two ground balls against Skidmore. On Saturday, she helped the squad to a second win, this time over Trinity College, with a goal and four assists. Humes also managed a couple of draw controls in the game. The Panthers play Bates this afternoon, 4:15 p.m. at Kohn Field.
