Britton gets the nod to pitch in Cape Cod

Author: Jeff Patterson

It is not too often that a Division III baseball player gets a chance to spend his summer playing in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League, but Middlebury right-hander Jack Britton '08 will get that shot.

The Hyannis Mets, who have had Major Leaguers Jason Varitek, Kris Benson, Matt Morris, Scott Procotor and J.J. Putz suit up for them in recent years, have offered Britton a temporary four-week contract to pitch for them.

"It's been a dream of mine to play there," said Britton, who led the Panthers with 39 strikeouts and three complete games this year. "I'll just show them what I've got and hopefully I can stay. If I do really well I get to stay there the rest of the summer."

Britton, who features a two-seam fastball, a four-seamer, a cutter and a curve, is working to improve his change-up. He will need to mix up his pitches when he faces the best collegiate hitters in the country.

"It's going to be a big challenge for sure. I'm just pumped," said Britton. "Even if I'm only there for the first month, I will have fulfilled my dream."
