Danlere new head of Health and Wellness

Former University of Vermont and Saint Michael's College staff counselor Jyoti Daniere has been selected as the College's new director of Health and Wellness Education.

One of Daniere's first objectives is to create programming that will seek to inform and educate students about the risks and dangers of alcohol and drug use. Other topics to be addressed by the Office of Heath and Wellness Education include eating disorders and sexual harassment. Daniere hopes to emphasize the development of good eating habits as well as routine exercise.

After her time at the University of Vermont and Saint Michael's College, Daniere started the Burlington Eating Disorders Center, which provides therapy to individuals suffering from sexual abuse and depression, in addition to eating disorders.

Hillcrest opened with lectures, discussions

The College celebrated the inaugural opening of its new Hillcrest Environmental Center with a series of discussions and lectures on Oct. 25-27. The building, a renovated 19th-century Vermont farmhouse, now holds the Middlebury environmental studies program and office of environmental affairs.

Located at the intersection of Hepburn Road and College Street, the Hillcrest Environmental Center was reconstructed using environmentally-friendly techniques and materials. Desktops and tabletops were built to include a mixture of sunflower seed hulls. Renovations included recycled carpeting and locally-made windows. Airlocks at building entrances help to maintain a regular interior temperature, and 20 percent of Hillcrest's electricity comes from the College's central heating facility.

College administrators expect Hillcrest to become certified for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). If the College receives the recognition, the Environmental Center will become the campus' first LEED-certified facility.
