Women win at Williams

Author: Jake Cohen

Nothing is better than a win at the end of a regular season - just ask the Middlebury women's golf team. They traveled this past weekend to Williamstown, Mass. to compete in the Williams Spring Invitational, facing their main competitor in a much-hyped match.

"We were really excited to go to this tournament and couldn't wait to get out there and play our game," said Courtney Mazzei '11. Her enthusiasm helped her game beautifully as she shot a two-day total of 166, good for second-best on the team and sixth overall.

In fitting fashion, captain Karen Levin '08 led the team, finishing fifth overall with a 164. Levin looked forward to such a performance all season.

"We've been waiting for the match when everyone on the team has a good weekend, and we certainly haven't done that yet." This match, though, may hve been the first time that exactly that kind of consistency came about, and it brought with it commensurate results.

The women won the event by eight strokes, less than one and a half strokes per golfer. The event was a very tight competition, which made their victory all that much sweeter. Middlebury is hoping for an at-large bid to the NCAA national championships, which would mark its second appearance in three years.
