Less than two years after leaving the College due to family needs, Shirley Ramirez will return as Dean of the College July 1, President of the College Ronald D. Liebowitz announced in an e-mail Feb. 1.
Along with her return, current Dean of the College Tim Spears will shift roles. Liebowitz did not explain what those duties would be, but promised to do so later in the semester. Spears will be on leave for the spring semester.
Ramirez first arrived at the College in 2007 following a stint as Executive Vice President at the Posse Foundation. During her time in Vermont, she served as Dean for Institutional Diversity and then as Vice President for Institutional Planning and Diversity.
In December 2008, Ramirez left the College to find a geographic location better suited for her family needs. Since then, she has served as Vice President for Institutional Planning and Community Engagement at Lafayette College.
Liebowitz said the community would happily welcome Ramirez back into the community.
“I know that I speak for many when I say I am delighted that Shirley will be rejoining us,” he wrote in the e-mail. “I have been committed to filling the position of chief diversity officer, and the change in Shirley’s personal circumstances made her return possible.”
While at Middlebury, Ramirez helped create a new center focused on the comparative study of race and ethnicity. She oversaw ADA compliance, international student and scholar services, institutional research and other administrative areas.
Before coming to the Posse Foundation, Ramirez taught at New York University, Georgetown University, George Mason University and Duke University.
