Mike Thomas, vice president for administration and chief risk officer, plans to leave Middlebury in March and enter a new role as the Chief Financial and Administrative Office at Amherst College.
Thomas came to Middlebury in 2013 after working previously at Skidmore College. During his time at Middlebury, Thomas oversaw Covid-19 operations, worked to hire a new Public Safety director, helped address student concerns regarding safety, oversaw the creation of student housing at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies (MIIS) and served as the finance lead of Oracle for the Green Mountain Higher Education Consortium (GMHEC).
“Mike [Thomas] shared with us that this new position will allow him to move into a leading financial and administrative role and to build on his many achievements of the last 10 years at Middlebury,” President Patton wrote in an email to faculty and staff. “He will oversee both finance and operations as a member of the senior leadership team and as a strategic partner for the president and Board of Trustees.”
Amherst announced that Thomas will begin his role on March 27 of this year. In a press release, President of Amherst College Michael Elliott said, “His track record of inclusive leadership at Middlebury demonstrated that he knows what it means to lead a talented team and to work in collaboration with faculty, staff and students. He will be a critical strategic partner to me and to all of us at Amherst.”
“We are grateful for Mike’s leadership in all of these initiatives, and we will share more about the leadership transition closer to his departure,” President Patton wrote.
