Inside the Locker Room with Scarlett Kirk '14

Rookie sensation Scarlett Kirk ’14 burst onto the Middlebury sports scen two weeks ago in spectacular fashion, providing the offensive spark that helped propell the Middlebury College Women’s soccer team to one of their most exciting wins in recent memory.
“That game was awesome,” said Kirk, speaking publically for the first time about her late-game heroics. “It was unreal, I was so exhausted. I don’t think it really hit me until long after the game was over.”
By now, we all know about the frantic comeback over Amherst, the three goals in nine minutes to tie the game and the golden goal in overtime to win it. We also know that three of those goals, including the game winner, belonged to Kirk. But what don’t we know about this soccer wunderkind, who has been described as “Pele only if he were super awesome?”
Well it turns out she’s not just in to soccer. This first-year phenom from San Francisco is a two-sport star who will also be playing basketball for the Panthers this winter. She does admit, however, that she’s never been able to pick a favorite between the two sports.
“It usually depends on whatever team I’m on that’s better,” said Kirk.
She waffles less on her preferred moniker for her playing style; openly describing herself as a “Beast” on the soccer pitch.  Her classmate and teamate Julie Favorito ’14 matched her word for word on this one, while  her former high school teammate, current Middlebury soccer player, and friend of 10 years Maddie Boston ’13 opted for the more graceful “Lioness,” which, unfortunately, does not net her any points.
While it might have been easy for her teammates to describe her on the field, where they see her every week, neither could have possibly guessed Kirk’s secret dream job, that of a Broadway Actress.
“It’s funny, I can’t sing or dance at all, but it’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” confided Kirk to this reporter.
Kirk’s teammates had similar difficulty trying to guess her favorite Giants player. Kirk prefers rookie catcher Buster Posey, who she hopes will handle the San Francisco pitching staff adequately in the upcoming World Series against Texas. While neither Boston nor Favorito came close, Boston gets partial credit here because Brian Wilson is just plain awesome.
When it comes to celebrating goals (which Kirk had plenty of chances to do against Amherst), Kirk admits she is not much for flair, but will occasionally throw her hands up in the air. It is unclear whether or not she also sings “Ayo” and expresses a need to let go. Favorito nailed this one on the head, while Boston gets points for humor. Remember, it is always a good idea to throw a teammate under the bus in Inside the Locker Room.
When the final tally was counted in this defensive struggle between soccer players, longevity of relationship proved to be no match for sheer luck, and as the reader can clearly see for themself, it’s a tie.
After such scintilating dialouge about the intimate details of Kirk’s personal life, the Middlebury sports fan can only have further question: after her heroic hat trick, what does Kirk do next?
“I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to duplicate that performance, though I’ll certainly try,” replied Kirk with a sheepish grin on her face. Perhaps if Kirk were to put that kind of effort in week in and week out on the stage instead of the pitch, we might be seeing her in a revival of West Side Story before too long.,
