Jimmy Wong

While Rebecca Black, thirteen-year-old YouTube love/hate sensation, was dominating the viral airwaves with her prepackaged hit “Friday,” another Internet sensation was brewing, this one far smarter and far more important to the Middlebury community.

If you’re not one of the million people who have already watched “Asians in the Library Song” by Jimmy Wong ‘9.5 then get to it. Wong moved out to Los Angeles after graduating from Middlebury and has slowly been building a following on the Internet. Starting with a few appearances in his brother’s videos (YouTube sensation Freddie Wong), Jimmy has now gained attention for his humorous and well-recorded songs and performances. None however, made quite the splash that his video response to UCLA student Alexandra Wallace’s cluelessly offensive rant has. Wong takes Wallace’s absurd political incorrectness and cleverly subverts it into a comedic song while still astutely responding to the blatant racial insensitivity of her tirade.

Congratulations to Jimmy for using his talents well. Hopefully we will be seeing more from Middlebury’s singing comedian/social commentator.

Wong has also released all his songs on iTunes and is giving 100% of the profits to the relief efforts in Japan.
