Middlebury canceled the three C.V. Starr Schools in Italy for the spring semester due to concerns over the coronavirus COVID-19. Assistant Director of International Programs Alessandra Capossela said the decision was prompted by concerns that students might face more difficulties leaving the country as the virus spreads and governments impose stricter travel travel regulations.
Middlebury has suspended its school in Ferrara, Italy, after its host university has delayed the start of classes.

I expected to write this column under vastly different circumstances. Instead, I sit writing this piece at home, having repatriated back to the U.S. and now facing a week of self-quarantine.
Capital Normal University, where students were participating in a Winter Term program, has been closed to all non-university personnel. Students have to check in and out when leaving and returning to campus.
