The Student Government Association (SGA) and The Middlebury Campus hosted the annual presidential debate for the 2024-2025 academic year in Wilson Café on April 9, co-moderated by Campus editors Ryan McElroy ’25 and Shane Silverman ’24.5. Voting for the election, and for SGA class senators, will open via Presence at noon on April 11 and will close at midnight on April 13.

Middlebury College is the largest employer in Addison County. The role of the college as an employer and lifeline to many workers in the community remains essential to building a stronger campus for staff and students alike. Despite improvements to wages and compensation systems, there remain structural issues facing Middlebury staff that the college has a duty to address. At the same time, students have a responsibility to create a safer and easier environment for college staff.

Since our last staff issue, Middlebury has unveiled a new skill-based compensation system, seen rising housing costs and childcare shortages, faced severe understaffing in the dining halls and Davis Family Library, and seen some of its most experienced staff members leave.

Only 39.5% of staff members live within the town of Middlebury, according to data the college Human Resources department sent to The Campus. The same data highlights that 21.7% of staff live further than 15 miles from campus.

As college students start to roll out of bed and slowly trickle into morning classes, contractors from the local community are already hard at work on campus building the future of the college. Every Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., around 75 employees from Naylor & Breen, a construction company based in Brandon, Vt., are at work on campus constructing the new residence hall on Battell Beach.
